History: This rain secured an excellent soil moisture regime for the healthy Spring growth and abundant fruit set of Shiraz vines. January and March were relatively cool which promoted vibrant colours and good acid structure. February was warm to hot which ensuredripe berry flavours and clean Shiraz grapes at harvest. Shiraz Rose captures both rich berry fruit flavours for the warmer grape districts with structure and spice from the cooler regions.

Winemaking details: The fully ripened Shiraz grapes for 2004 were cool night harvested and tank pressed as soon as the grapes arrived to minimise skin contact and ensure vibrant and soft fruit flavours. Natural pink colour is a result of rapid tank press process. After clarification, the jiuce was cool fermented with selected yeast strain. Final wines were blended, stabilised and clarified before early bottling. A small amount of residual carbon dioxide is present as a result of yeast fermentation and early bottling.

International Wine Challenge 2007

Wines in the Tesco range picked up more than 287 awards at the International Wine Challenge (IWC), an increase of 27% on last year.

Every year, producers, retailers and critics from around the world gather together to take part in the IWC, the world's largest tasting competition. Such is its prestige and influence that it's known as the 'Wine Oscars'. This year, the 400-strong jury blind tasted approximately 10,000 wines from 37 countries.

Each is judged solely on its merit, so wines from the top Chateaux go head-to-head with those from individual winemakers. Neither reputation, nor money, is allowed to cloud anyone's judgement. During the first week of the Challenge, one question dominates: Is this wine worth an award? If so, it goes through to the second round.

Judging is scrupulously fair, even those wines rejected at this stage are double-checked to make sure that nothing has been overlooked. In the second week, it's down to business. Those wines that have made the grade are given a ‘Commended’, and then the medals are awarded from bronze through silver to gold. A tiny number of medal winners are considered worthy of special praise and receive a Trophy for being the best in their field. All the wines are judged on quality and style - their price is irrelevant. In total, wines in the Tesco range picked up more than 287 awards. We're very proud of the quality of our wine range and it's pleasing when others agree. Click on the link to see a selection of our best award winning wines currently in stock:

Decanter World Wine Awards

Tesco picked up 92 medals at the Decanter World Wine Awards this year, including two Trophies.

The Decanter World Wine Awards celebrate the diversity of wine by focusing on regional styles and the influence of terroir. Wines are judged on a regional level to promote a sense of origin over international homogenised styles. The wines are judged in two price bands: under £10 and over £10.

Decanter enlists some of the world's most respected experts to head up the regional panels. Each has been chosen for his/her specialist knowledge of a specified area and will oversee a team of judges also chosen for their in-depth knowledge. A thorough understanding of a regional style is crucial for recognising outstanding quality rather than simply rewarding wines crafted specifically as 'competition' wines.

Yaldara Estate Shiraz

With spicy plum and prune flavours, this powerful but still youthful Shiraz is best decanted about two hours before drinking.

What wine expert said...

"This rich, powerful Shiraz comes from the famous Chateau Yaldara known for its ripe Shiraz style. It is a blend of fruit from the Barossa Valley and Langhorne Creek, south east of Adelaide. The 2004 is still youthful with spicy plum and prune flavours, and would benefit from being decanted a couple of hours in advance. The Yaldara is especially delicious with duck and goose but also partners turkey and beef well. It is ready to drink now but can be kept for four to five years to mellow further."

Storage instructions: To enjoy this wine at its best, drink within 3 years of purchase.

History: The wine was blended specifically to create a wine with intense character from the three varieties used. The blend is made from wine from South Eastern Australia to allow the flexibility of vineyards from this region to produce the best possible wine.

Winemaking details: The fruit was harvested at night to take advantage of the cooler conditions. It was then crushed and fermented on skins in stainless steel fermenting tanks for six days. Following the ferment was pressed off skins and inoculated for malolactic fermentation. Blending occurred after both primary and secondary fermentation occurred before stabilisation and clarification.

What our wine expert said...

"The grapes for this wine came from Rosemount's vineyards in Langhorne Creek and the McLaren Vale in South Australia, and Mudgee in New South Wales. It was aged for nine months in American oak. The original Rosemount Estate is in the Upper Hunter Valley,a part of the Hunter surrounded by more dramatic hills than further downstream. It was planted in the '80s by Bob Oatley, back from a former life as a coffee trader in Papua New Guinea. One of the Rosemount wineries is on the estate."
